If you look carefully you can notice that some "squarish" entities like assemblers actually are rectangular and some like turrets and roboports have a "free" space behind them that is obscured by relatively tall sprites.

Glad I searched for this.

I've finally gotten into working heavily with trains and the fact that the cargo wagon lengths do not align to the grid makes things needlessly difficult. The locomotives are all exactly 8 units wide when oriented horizontally, so why not have the cargo wagons also be 8 units? That way it allows for replacing a wagon with a locomotive or vice-versa and the hookups will still work perfectly, plus setting up loading and unloading stations becomes much more consistent and manageable.

Hm, it's at the point where I think I'll invest some time and effort into modding it myself if one doesn't exist already.

I have made a mod that changes the locomotives and cargo wagons to be exactly 8 units long horizontally.

It doesn't change the fact that the vertical orientation is shorter than the horizontal one, but it does make creating train stations and the like much easier.
