[2.0] Ghost cursor menu when not in remote view

Post by mycatlikesmilk »

TL;DR
Add option to open ghost cursor menu from remote view when not in remote view
What?
Firstly, I want to set some terms for comfortable writing:
- IC - In Character. When you are playing as character and can move him via WASD
- OOC - Out Of Character. Or remote view. When you are observe planets and platforms via M button

All core factorio players know that LMB is to place building and Shift+LMB is to place ghost of building
2.0 gives us a new feature: ghost cursor menu when you press E in OOC. It is very usefull when you are building on a different planets
So, here is some QoL improvement. If E is open an inventory (IC) then it would be great to use Shift+E to open ghost cursor menu (still in IC)
Now this functional is party available via quickbars, but this option looks not so fun
Why?
This improvement makes game more intuitively clear and make experience of planning factories better and more comfortable

Sorry, I don't know how "ghost cursor menu" actually named in English, so I hope this image can explain it clearly about whan menu I wrote earlier

This is a great suggestion. Let's take it a little further.

The ghost cursor menu has one benefit: it let's me place something I don't have in inventory or hotbars and can't easily eyedrop. It's not a lot, but I would love this functionality outside remote view.

Unfortunately, the ghost cursor menu is being used to indicate whether or not you're in remote view. Which makes it difficult to do the things you want to do in the other direction too. So, in remote view, if you want to access your inventory for any reason (grab a blueprint, check how many items you have, hand craft something, etc), you can't do that either. You have to close remote view to get into your inventory, and assuming you still want to work in remote view, you need to open it and find your spot again.

Both these things could be solved by making a dedicated ghost cursor menu shortcut key, and leaving the inventory shortcut key to only open the inventory. So as you've suggested, E would always open the inventory, and Shift+E would always open the ghost cursor menu. And we don't really need the ghost cursor menu to help indicate we're in remote view, because the whole remote view is bordered and labeled.

I also find myself wishing for this. I find myself constantly going to map view to get the ghost cursor selection, for example for modules I don't have with me. And I agree with Ovidian in that I find myself also wishing for a inventory shortcut in map view.

I wonder if a different border style for the Ghost cursor menu and also Remote view would make the difference between iC and OoC clearer to the player ?
(And not as jarring as the sides of the 1.1 map view.)

Maybe something blue-ish, (transparent-ish ??) like the new ghosts ?
