I think it would be interesting, particularly for the end-game & creative modes, to have yet another assembly machine that:
(1) takes only a 1x1 grid space, and
(2) "ejected" its product in one direction much like mining drills
If we're being honest, there have always been some "timelordian physics" in factorio (e.g. pulling one of a hundred locomotives from your pocket then jumping inside it)... so I don't think "making it smaller" is at odds with game lore, or tech advancement at-large.
In addition to being able to make super-compact production chains, it also introduces a quirky mechanic of putting things on the near-side of the belt (using an inserter places things on the far side), which ordinarily requires an additional transport belt to accomplish.

+1. It is possible to emulate this with hidden loaders / composite entities but it is annoying and prone to breaking. An option to have furnaces and assemblers output directly onto belts like miners would be very welcome.
Re: Automation 4: Miniaturization / Super-tiny inserterless 1x1 assembly machines
I don't see the why. Why should I miniaturize (for me space was never a problem)?
BTW: for 1x1 Loaders I recommend https://mods.factorio.com/mod/deadlock- ... es-loaders

Cool suggestion: Eatable MOUSE-pointers.

It doesn't do the ejecting onto belts, but my nanotorio mod resizes basically everything to 1x1.
