It's quite silly to be given the same inventory no matter how far into the tech tree the game is when joining a multiplayer server for the first time.
Perhaps swap the burner drill for an electric drill once that has been researched? Perhaps add in some free belts and/or inserters when those have been researched? It's a balancing job for sure, but not too hard.

Why? Then people would just put all the items in a chest, kill themselves, and repeat.

I would rather get rid of initial items entirely. You don't really need them, you can make them by yourself pretty quick. And in later phase of game you gather useless items every time you are respawning.

I made the assumption that you would get a different inventory the first time you connect to a game and another when you respawn. The system is much less gameable if you only give freebies the first time.

Isn't the player some sort of crashed ship survivor? Start the inventory with nothing, and put the starting kit in the ship/wreckage.
