I feel there is a lot of room to be able to research into higher tier power tech. I found that the only way to power lasers was to have the most rediculous solar panel and capacitor farm. Would be nice to have for example:

-advanced capacitor
-advanced solar panel
-sub station that actually amplifies incoming power to help high bursts of power drain.
-underground cables
-larger power lines that extend a much greater distance
-solar mod for vehicle (laser options etc..)
-turret shields?
-expensive component upgrades to add more advantages (capacitor has more storage, panels power more etc...)

By no means should this be easy to achieve but should be something worthwhile along the lines of finally making it to the point where you have a robot city instead of belts.
