Better visual indication of depleted oil fields

Post by JasonC »

Currently all resources except oil can be easily visually inspected in both the game view and the map to determine if they are depleted. Visually you can see when ore/stone/coal is gone, in both views.

I'd really like to have the same ability with oil, so I propose the following (although anything to improve the situation would be nice, this is just one of a few ideas):
  • If an oil field has ~10% yield, either make the field disappear, or change its graphic to something more dried up looking.
  • If an oil field has ~10% yield, remove its magenta dot from the map (regardless of disappear vs. dried up graphic choice).
  • Optionally, if a pumpjack has ~0.1/s yield, somehow change it visually (since unlike drills you can't see through it to the oil field). Perhaps a red light on it or a different color smoke or something.
I think this would really help managing oil fields, making it as easy to tell if oil is depleted as it is with other resources. It's arguably even more important with oil than other resources, since mining drills just stop when they're depleted, but infinite resource mines like pumpjacks keep consuming energy and generating pollution forever.

Some points from a chat discussion:
  • I do use YARM, but I'm always looking for solutions to things that don't add more GUI stuff to the main screen. It's already pretty cluttered by mods.
  • Personally, I remove pump jacks when they're down to 10% yield.
  • Yeah yeah, infinite resources aren't "depleted", technically, but that's the closest word I know.
Took a break from 0.12.29 to 0.17.79, and then to ... oh god now it's 1.something. I never know what's happening.

Hello,

i created a little 'mod' (mod would be a exaggeration) that change that.

If you wish i can add to send a message on sceen if an oil patch is depleted.

With v0.13 you will (eventually) be able to measure the yield of the oil-field and you can so simply place a red lamp at every pump-station, which turns on, when yield is below X.
Cool suggestion: Eatable MOUSE-pointers.

Yeah, that'll help a lot. You couldn't see it on the map overview though. It's too bad the modding API doesn't let you create attack-style warning notifications.

Oh this is great. Super helpful. This way the pink dots disappear on the map.

Nah, no message. The messages stop the game if you're not watching them.

Sweet, thanks.
