An A+ soundtrack makes games memorable.

Post by Chonto »

Lots of things make a good game into a great game. A good story, beautiful art and scenery, unique gameplay and mechanics... and an unforgettable soundtrack.
Think back on all your favorite games of all time. What is the *one* thing they have in common?

Even if they are very different genres on different platforms, they *all* have amazing soundtracks. Metroid, Super Mario, Portal, Doom, Zelda, Halo, Sonic, Undertale, Castlevania, Minecraft, Half Life, Mega Man... I can go on but you get the idea. These games would still be fun without good music, but they become amazing, even legendary, when we find ourselves humming the melodies that made them so special for us. And any good musician will attest to the powerful impact music has on defining our experiences. The entire mood and atmosphere of the hours you spend can be elevated, or flattened, by what you're listening to.

Unfortunately, Factorio is really lacking in this department. The soundtrack in this game is 'generic' at best and 'easily ignored' at worst. The good news is, there's nothing at all special or unique about a good soundtrack. Again, any musician worth their salt can choose the right melodies for the occasion. All it takes is some attention and sensitivity to the needs of your project. So with the success of Factorio growing, doesn't this game deserve the services of a quality artist? Can you start to imagine what kind of magical soundtrack might exist for a game this amazing? Factorio deserves it, don't you think?

The thing is Factorio's soundtrack used to be, imho, the kind of unforgettable soundtrack you're talking about.
But it recently changed to something more contemplative, that sometimes appear between ambiant noises, and ... I really regret it's the case ... But I thought I was a minority.

If you bought the game on the website, you'll be able to DL older versions of the game. The soundtrack is basically ogg files in \data\core\sound\ambient until 0.11 included, and in data\base\sound\ambient since 0.12
The change I disliked occured when going from 0.11 to 0.12

I went and found the files you're talking about and picked the one I liked the best.

This is good and delivers the ambient aspect of a good soundtrack, but we still need more than that.

When I'm thinking of memorable and unforgettable for Factorio, I'm thinking of adding stuff that sounds like this.

A great soundtrack will have a blend of energetic, ambient, and transitional melodies. It'll have *everything* and even if there's a few songs you feel eh about, there's more than a few you'll remember for years to come.

Ah. I gather then we are still waiting on a finished soundtrack. I know little of Daniel Taylor other than what I just listened to here http://danieljamestaylor.co.uk/, but he seems like a talented individual. I guess we'll see soon enough. :)
