Tech tree search is very unintuitive feeling

The highlighted area looks like you can click it to search but you can't.

Instead you need to click the small spyglass icon. Then a place to type the search pops up:

It would be way more intuitive to be able to click on the search bar to start typing, instead of having to click the little spyglass icon.

Interesting, I never thought that someone would expect this behaviour.

I still need to go with what we have, because this is a general concept of a toolbar, where more things can be available at the same time (look at load game gui for example).

Since Control+F for search can be used (and I automatically use it everywhere, since it is easy to get used to it from all the other applications), I don't consider it a big issue, at least not now.

Yeah, certainly not a "big issue" but I honestly fell victim to the same assumption. I tried clicking into what appears to be the search input field, and was a little jarred to find that it wasn't working. I instead head to either use KB shortcut (I use "/" instead of "ctrl+f") or click on the search icon first.

Most search boxes have two elements, input field and search button, and allow you to click directly into the search input field, and don't require clicking the "search button" to activate the input field. The forum search in the top right of the forum for example. You can just click in the input field and begin typing, no need to click the "magnifying glass" first to activate the field.

But again, not a big issue.
