Dedicated Server Requirements?

Post by bartaslondon »

Hi,

I've got a question regarding server requirements, at the moment I'm running Factorio on CPU High Priority, 1GB Ram and sometimes I can see the gaming is lagging especially when I'm driving a car or even when placing a belts. There is only two of us who play on that map. The place where I'm renting a server is offering more ram, service hosted on SSD or CPU Extra Performance. Is there any point to add more RAM, SSD or CPU to avoid lags?
I'm not sure if that makes any difference we run Bob's mods and few smaller ones.

Is the CPU usage close to 100%? Is the system swapping?

I just used termites to remove a larger area of trees and CPU went to 10% and memory was about 2%. Also I was driving a car and felt lags, CPU and memory didn't move any further than on termites.
It's my first multiplayer map so maybe it's normal ( I hope not) but definitely driving a car is not comfortable.

The resource usage of a factorio server depends highly on the number of structures build and those in operation. You can start off with a few 100MB RAM usage and barely any cpu usage (depending on your cpu of course). As your factory grows, so grows your resource usage.

By the way, there is not really a point in running a process with high cpu priority as long as your cpu is not at 100% at any time (where processes with higher priority would get available resources before those with lower priority...).
