Many broken icon links

Post by Phasma Felis »

There's a whole bunch of broken icon links with red Xs on the wiki right now. Science pack is a good example, but most of the English-language Pages with broken file links have the same issue. A few of them seem to be caused by spaces instead of dashes in the icon tag (e.g. "icon|Science pack 1" should be "icon|Science-pack-1"), but not most. I've looked at the affected pages' edit history and it doesn't seem to be caused by recent edits. Anyone know what's going on?

Sorry about that. I ran a script to move all icons so that they don't have - in their names. Unfortunately I made that script very fast. When I ran it, it sent more requests to the API than permitted by the rate limit of the wiki, so not all move requests to the API were actually processed. Since when running the script it showed that it moved all pages (when it didn't), I changed a template that is connected to how icons link to files. By changing that, the icons suddenly tried to link to something that didn't exist.

I noticed the error after that happened and moved all the pages that the script missed with Gangsir's help, so all icons should now link the correct file. Currently the wiki still has to update a lot of pages, so icons can show as missing when they are actually fine code-wise and the "pages with broken file links" category will show pages that are fine. However, if you notice missing icons after the next few hours, please let me know so that I can fix them.

Betka, over short or long you need to have the current servers twice. One for PRODUCTION and the other for TESTING or QUALITY ASSURANCE.
Sure you know that yourself. :)

You say on the day we made a mass move and edit and nothing was broken for more than the hour it took the software to process the job queue :P But yeah, that is a good idea if we do mass changes in the future, though that is very unlikely as we now have cleaned up most of the oddities behind the wiki.

Well, that's the point of such changes: You don't need a test-server, until you change something and then you don't have time to make one or it is faster to live with the bugs. ;) I saw it on so many customers and when my company comes and we say "You need a test server with exactly the same configuration" they say "But we don't change so much" then we say "You don't change so much, CAUSE you cannot test." :)

My latest project was some server, which has been running on PHP 4. In words: Four!! They booked us, cause they where not able to handle any update with only two persons anymore: They have had so many small issues, that it took a month to update.

The same is it for the forum, the mod portal, the main website: Any more or less professional company needs to test before taking something live. :)

PS: The wiki looks great. :)
