The Research Theory

Post by RemiPL »

Until 0.15 the bases that I built barely worked. There was always missing some resources. So when the update came up and changed almost everything in research I decide to "calculate my base". Here are the results.

To begin with, the amount of raw resources to assembly one science pack of each type is:
159.35 iron, 120 copper, 14 coal, 10 stone, 206.25 petroleum, 7.5 heavy oil

I also calculated the amount of intermediate products (for one pack of each type):
16.5 iron gears, 57 circuits, 6.5 advanced circuits, 13 plastic, 6.5 steel, 7.5 lubricant, 7.5 sulfuric acid

But the amount of resources is not the only thing that i calculated.

There are the numbers of assembling machines 3 (1.25 speed)/chemical plants/electric furnaces (2 speed) needed in order to craft that amount in 30 seconds:
0.22 iron gears, 0.76 circuits, 1.04 advanced circuits, 0.433333 plastic, 1.89583 steel, 0.02 lubricant, 0.004 sulfuric acid

The number of assembling machines 3 for crafting science packs (still one of each type in 30 sec):
0.133333 Science pack 1, 0.16 Science pack 1, 0.32 Science pack 3, 0.133333 Military science pack, 0.186667 Production science pack, 0.186667 High tech science pack

And the number of assembling machines 3/ chemical plants for crafting the direct items needed to craft science packs (still one of each type in 30 sec):
Science pack 1: 0.0133333 iron gears (included in calulation higher)
Science pack 2: 0.0133333 inserters, 0.0133333 transport belts
Science pack 3: 0.16 advanced circuits (included in calulation higher), 0.266667 engine, 0.0533333 mining drill
Military science pack: 0.08 piercing ammo, 0.213333 granade, 0.213333 gun turret
Production science pack: 0.266667 electric engine, 0.0133333 assembling machines, 0.133333 electric furnaces
High tech science pack: 0.133333 battery, 0.8 processing unit, 0.4 Speed module, 0.2 copper cable

Example:
Productoion 128 packs of each type per minute:

Raw resources:
19 122 iron, 14 400 copper, 1680 coal, 600 stone, 24 750 petroleum, 900 heavy oil

Intermediate products:
1980 iron gears, 6840 circuits, 780 advanced circuits, 1560 plastic, 780 steel, 900 lubricant, 900 sulfuric acid

Assembling machines 3/chemical plants/electric furnaces:
13.2 iron gears, 45.6 circuits, 62.4 advanced circuits, 26 plastic, 113.75 steel, 1.2 lubricant, 0.24 sulfuric acid

8 Science pack 1, 9.6 Science pack 1, 19.2 Science pack 3, 8 Military science pack, 11.2 Production science pack, 11.2 High tech science pack

Science pack 1: 0.8 iron gears (included in calulation higher)
Science pack 2: 0.8 inserters, 0.8 transport belts
Science pack 3: 9.6 advanced circuits (included in calulation higher), 16 engine, 3.2 mining drill
Military science pack: 4.8 piercing ammo, 12.8 granade, 12.8 gun turret
Production science pack: 16 electric engine, 0.8 assembling machines, 0.8 electric furnaces
High tech science pack: 8 battery, 48 processing unit, 24 Speed module, 12 copper cable

Warnings:
I don't take space science packs into consideration.
These are ony pure calculations. There may be mistakes (I am pretty sure there are). I will be grateful if some one could help me find them.

Do you use productivity module on everything possible? Because if yes, the numbers shouldn't be that high. I got 100 iron, 50 copper, 136 crude oil from my calculation including space science. For your information, there is a mod that gives you in-game production calculator including what modules you use. https://mods.factorio.com/mods/Helfima/helmod

+1 for Helmond! Thee interface takes a bit of getting used to, but it makes it so easy to calculate anything you need in factorio, including throughput, modules, beacons, etc.
