Gun Turrets?

Gun Turrets?

I have noticed that Gun Turrets work in a different way than i thought, what can they shoot over, and do they have a minimum range? it seems that if aliens get too close they stop shooting and if walls are placed they used to fire over but now just sit idly not doing anything.
