Help me find the post

Post by WIZ4 »

In this post, one of the developers wrote that the map is not infinite, and its maximum size is approximately 8 000 000 x 8 000 000 cells.
This post I need to prove that one player that the map is not infinite.

According to FFF #64 it was 8 million tiles for a while, but since 0.13.7 the map is limited to 2000x2000km (2 000 000 tiles x 2 000 000 tiles), you can quote the changelog on that:
FactorioBot in Version 0.13.7 wrote:
  • Bugfixes
    • Fixed map generator problems very far from the start.
    • Map size is now limited to 2000 km by 2000 km with a black bar rather than crashing when reaching this distance
There's also that quote in the same changelog thread:
Oxyd wrote:Guys, there's always been a limit to the map size. The change is that now when you reach the limit, you'll get a black border instead of a crash.

Since most of you probably never noticed the map size limit, I'd say the size is “bigger than you'd ever need”. :P

Only 4 trillion tiles? pfft :p

Big kudos to the devs, I don't think any other game comes even close to a fraction of that magnitude.
Better forum search for modders: Enclose your search term in quotes, eg. "font_color" or "custom-input" - it prevents the forum search from splitting on hypens and underscores, resulting in much more accurate results.

So it's one million tiles from the center to the edge...

How long would it take to walk that?

That's the ride from one end to the other. The ride from the center (starting point) to the map edge would only be about 4 hours when driving straight N/S/E/W.

1000 km (distance from center to edge) / 250 km/h (~ top speed of locomotive) = 4 hours

After an experiment measuring running speed using combinators on a 100 tile track I arrived at these numbers:
It takes 675 ticks to run 100 tiles without exoskeletons (32 km/h) and 225 ticks when using 6 fully powered exoskeletons (96 km/h), which means that without exoskeletons it takes 31.25 hours and with 6 exoskeletons it takes 10.4 hours to reach the edge of the map (from the center) if there are no trees/lakes/biters in the way.

When I was young I got goosebumps when I saw the first games, that had more than 200 tiles in quadrat.
That's now 20 years ago. Now considering Moores Law, then every 20 years we become 1000 times bigger computers.

Interesting question: What will games like Factorio look like in 20 years (with 1000 times more computer power?)

I will begin:
- They could simulate the whole world (logistic and production) in realtime!

... the next may add a point ...
