Having a bit of a problem categorizing the game

Post by Drury »

So I'm making a game page for this game on a gaming website.

NAME: Factorio
DEVELOPER: ummm...
DISTRIBUTOR: see above
RELEASE DATE: hell if I know
HOMEPAGE: http://www.factorio.com/
GENRE: Action Adventure Survival Management Puzzle Strategy RPG? But I can only pick two... I'll go with Management Survival
PLATFORM: PC
ESRB RATING: None yet

That'll do.

I'd categorize it as a puzzle strategy game. I don't know whether programming is really valid as a genre, since the example, spacechem, should be classified as puzzle IMHO.

Here's also a bit about categorizing game genres:

Hey, this is quite interesting. :)

He says there are 9 core aesthetics:

1. Sensation / Sense pleasure
2. Fantasy
3. Narrative
4. Challenge (often mistaken as difficulty)
5. Fellowship
6. Competition
7. Discovery
8. Expression
9. Abnegation / Submission

With that criteria it is a fantasy, narrative challenge, with very big discovery and expression, and high abnegation. :)
Cool suggestion: Eatable MOUSE-pointers.

Just use "sandbox", it's the closest you can get with single word denominations^^

"sandbox survival" would be the best way to classify it.. also recently known as "minecraft clone"... but like they explain in the extra credits video... genres are a weird thing when it comes to games :)
your goal in the game is to tech up and survive... and you have no specific goal on an endless map...
it has other stuff in it too but when you categorize a game you have to look at the core of the game... while some would say building a factory is the "core" of the game, that is only a means to and end here... and that is to survive... same as with minecraft... mining and crafting there is a means to an end...

I would say simulation and strategy. At least there is a heavy does of those, its like the main. There is an insane amount of strategy involved in building a factory that not only works, but doesnt take up half the map "which i dont know how is possible since it unlimited". but still.

And then the simulation part, ive never played a game that simulated a factory like this before.

Im still blown away by the sheer performance when handling so many sprites.

I mean even prison architech can run quite bad at times and laggy. And this game has WAAAAAAAAY more moving sprites.

But yeah this game is a lot of things.

Factory Simulator done deal!.

Its a shame we dont need to eat. can you imagine setting up a factory for farms with sheep and pigs that get fed into a machine, then get cooked, and then refrigerated hehe
