So I played around with it a bit. It works out pretty well; the issue I keep running into with the controller in general is that games designed specifically around having a large number of binary inputs (like Factorio and most MMOs) tend to overwhelm the controller's limited options, even with mode shifting. But in this case you can fit in everything important, if you set up a touchpad as a scroll wheel to scroll through the quickbar, and abuse mode shifting.

It works pretty well, takes some getting used to, but it's a far cry from KB/M, especially since you have to scroll through the quickbar instead of direct buttons. Still, it absolutely nails the "ten foot" problem that the controller is specifically designed to answer in the first place.

I think Factorio would have other problems with the livingroom setting, specifically the small UI and the low-contrast graphics. Still, it was worth a try. Thoughts?

Thoughts:
To be honest I've only tried Factorio once using a wireless Xbox360 controller (just to see if it works) and by that time I already was accustomed to Keyboard and Mouse.
So for me it just seems 'natural' to use KB+M for Factorio, but if you want to play it with a controller, that's fine too. However, my guess is that most people will stick to KB+M, that's the target platform after all.
