Steam family sharing (Rant)

Post by SyroNova »

Why isn't it possible to link an account that owns the game through steam family sharing to a Factorio account? From what I've seen, it's because you can download the game from the website once you link your account, and I guess the thought process is that people can join a family, make an account, then leave. If this is the reason, that is incredibly flawed. Firstly, you can only have a max of 6 people in a steam family, and you are only allowed to change families once per year, so someone trying to do this could only give it to five people each year, max. And on top of that, the account could just be unlinked if they leave the family, so they would lose access to multiplayer and mods. This would, if they even bothered to download from the website instead of steam, leave them with the equivalent of a pirated copy, which as much as game devs try to prevent it, piracy has, and will always be unavoidable. If doing all this would leave someone with a pirated copy that they could get from a Google search and like 2 clicks, no one would bother. So I see no reason to stop people who own a paid copy of the game through family sharing from downloading mods. And before someone tells me to "just buy the game yourself," I am an unemployed student with a total bank balance of $0.07, that simply isn't an option for me, and there is no logical reason as to why I should need to in this situation.

meh it doesn't make sense what you are requesting tbh. Through family sharing you can play games but you don't really obtain the license for those games, you are just allowed to play them because someone in your family has a license.

If you are a 'poor student' just go earn some money somewhere. And if one day you are done with your studies and became a doctor or something, can I also come to you for free medicine because I am poor?

Factorio > family sharing > N Steam copies + a lot of effort from developers' side to fix edge cases potentially stemming from it + whole bunch of potentially banned third party Steam accounts which belonged to Family but never participated in shady stuff
Factorio > no family sharing > N singleplayer copies from site + no risk nor wasted time/effort for anyone including developers and innocent bystanders
Do the math already.

Tell me about this.
I'm without a job proper for four years. In a region where my type of labor, things which I like and am capable to do for profit, is simply not necessary anymore.
I've managed to find a gig for Summer, which funded my family for awhile... and I did set aside some cash to buy DLC.

Don't play forum. Play the life. And you'll win.

Why would this be possible?

The whole point of family sharing is that you can "borrow" and play a game if the owner isn't currently playing it. If they decide to play it, you get bumped out.

What you're suggesting would get a free full copy of the game for each individual in the family, with no way to enforce the family sharing rules.

I can see why you would like this, but what would be the benefit to Wube?

Ask your family to buy you a copy? Or are you just adding your roommates to your "family".

Seriously. This forum is the nicest place I've seen in years, but I really wanna start a rant, reading that :?:  :!:

It's even the wrong place. Ask Steam why they don't give away freebies. It's family sharing, not family steam key duplicating.

Dave Ramsey might help too. Google him.
