I am a software engineer with around 3 years of experience, with my current job working in game development. I recently played Factorio and I love how much thought went into allowing the systems to be beautifully built when I read the dev blogs!
I would love to eventually contribute to the Factorio code one day and I am wondering from a developer's experience what kind of experience would be the most helpful in being able to contribute when I join? I know Factorio is written in C++, but the mods are written in Lua - would it be more helpful to work on creating mods or would it be better to contribute to an open-source game written in C++ like Endless Sky?
