It's true. A lot could be accomplished with more terrain types (mountains, swamp, jungle, ice, ...) that actually had an effect on your game-play, and some interesting map generation algorithms.

Elevation is tricky to get fun in a 2D-game. Maybe something for Factorio 2.

I'm the exact opposite. I see landscape features, including lakes as a huge annoyance, a hindrance to my desire to plan and build my factory as I want it, and so I'm very keen on mods such as the Landfill one that gives me the power to remove obstacles and hindrances.

Maybe it can be combined, with more actual equipment and consumables, and maybe even veichles for terraforming work. I use landfill, but it's a bit trivial for my taste.
