Is this possible? I've put about 8 hours into a save before I realised that apparently I forgot to tick the box in the setup??
Alternatively is it possible to start a new game with replay enabled and just copy the map over? (I don't particularly not recording the bit I've already done)

Normally, no. A replay file isn't very different from a tool assisted speed run in that it only copies player actions and the rest of the game runs from there. It is not possible to start a replay mid game since the previous inputs are required to make it work.
It is technically possible to begin a replay mid stream if you have the complete game state on hand before starting the replay. But that's a pretty unusual feature for any game.

Yeah that makes sense, especially with what I know about replays desyncing.

I wish it was possible... so that the replay itself starts from the point you enabled it.

I think, if you turn the save into a scenario, then start the scenario with replay enabled, it should work

Sorry for the necroposting.
Found that thread, somehow this does not work (at least with mods in 1.1.107). Upon starting a scenario, message pops up "Replay savings has been disabled" and no replay info is saved in new savefile. Same mod setup has no problem starting a fresh freeplay with replay enabled, but after creating scenario from a fresh freeplay - a message starts to pop up.

Note, that you can't continue the replay. You have to update it and cut it off, so to say
If it's still a problem, I can say, that it worked for me on 1.1.107 with seablock mod pack + some other mods. It might be a problem with the mod constellation on your side then.

This is a huge oversight from the devs. You should be able to enable replay on an existing save with a single click of a button in the menu, which would save the current game state and start recording inputs from there, allowing for replay from that point onward.
I've heard about the "export as scenario" workaround but users shouldn't have to jump through hoops just to enable replay.

That's said, the devs didn't prioritize the replay feature and I doubt it will change anytime soon, but who knows...
