About PvP as a situation

Post by ZwerOxotnik »

TL;DR
I'm not going to talk about the official PvP scenario. It's more about gameplay and people...

People have an intent to try PvP in Factorio but there are so many doubts etc...
There are many PvP scenarios, mods however I don't see so much activity among servers/players who play PvP and a community which will be interested in PvP actually...

Well... I noticed many people and some communities planning to play PvP but not playing, so it's a frustrating situation.
I've ideas to make mods/scenarios and change gameplay comfier for PvP however I'm not going to do that unless I'll know people have more interest in that than nowadays otherwise I'll be too much frustrated and because
it'll come to a misery end and not much changes will be in the situation.

I can't settle, I wanna see an interested community.

I personally have no desire for PvP in any game except those where PvP is an essential part of gameplay. This blanket statement covers Factorio entirely so no, I do not want PvP in it.

All IMO of course.

Maybe to play like a biter, to order how to attack the base, but not PvP with both technological forces.

Thar's exactly what I was about to post. I also feel like PvP is no good in games. And it should be only for the essential part just as you said. And this too is IMHO.:)

I have no interest in PVP, and I really appreciate games like Factorio, where you can PVP but you don't have to.

So please take the following as the view of one who has seen a lot of passionate PVP players (15 years in WoW), but isn't one. What I have seen, is that those who enjoy PVP, are passionate about it, and they delight in the challenge. And for some, the challenge of PVP is all they care about. So when that kind of player checks out a game like Factorio, they say nope no PVP challenge here, and they move on.

If you create some good PVP challenges, I think you might find PVP players who would enjoy them, and you might draw them in to the Factorio community, but I don't think you will find a lot of them here already. So I think you might get more interest by going to a PVP community and asking, hey if I built a PVP challenge in Factorio, would you give it a try? And because you can create scenarios in Factorio, you can constantly change and enhance those PVP challenges, you aren't stuck going back to Warsong Gulch over and over...
My own personal Factorio super-power - running out of power.

The amount of damage PvP can do to Factorio far outweighs the little fun it would bring, given the games core mechanics.

Imho.

The weapony is meh, the combat mechanics are meh, it's just not that good, but the moment you make PvP a bigger deal will be more whines about PvP balance etc.
If you wanna play a build games and do PvP, do something like Rust or Space Engineers or something that have a bigger core focus on it.
Just because a games engine and gameplay technically supports something, doesn't have to be PvP doesn't always mean it should.

This also applies to other software. Open Toons, for example, it's 'open source' now, but it frustrates people left and right because it's a 'professional software' that was used in 'studio production' (all true claims) but now that it's open, the vast majority of people get frustrated because they think it should be a general animation package for any freaking animation you can think of, when in reality it has a highly preferred workflow it expects.

So, while it IS theoretically possible for OpenToonz to 'be' like that, very generic, the path there is full of pain and misery and people would just be better off letting it be the specialist software it is.

Sadly, OT is not 'sold' (it's free, I'm using this as 'presentation' 'advertised') as a specialist software, hence the many frustrated users.

Factorio has the leg up there, it has a much clearer message and sets much clearer expectations. It's a grow the factory game, not a PvP game, and just because it theoretically COULD have that tacked on, well, maybe in the future, like, you know I'm not trying to put it past Wube to pull off a great PvP core element but it would also mean a big old overhaul, cause the combat isn't fun. In fact, I consider Factorio combat rather dumb and simplistic.

How are you even gonna PvP? Who spams more turrets? Who holds space on the target for longer? Cause you know, you don't even have to aim in Factorio.

So yeah, keep it out of Factorio unless it will be a serious, and focused, developement. Half assing it (which I would consider it if the core combat wasn't changed) I can see people just getting mad and whiny about etc.

I don't see any worth in that. There's many alternatives, Factorio doesn't have to do EVERYTHING. Let it be good at what it's really good at.
