Cooling towers like this are huge structures. I question the wisdom of just shrinking them down to fit the scale of everything else in Factorio. I think the cooling towers should be based on the smaller versions used in industry:

These examples are at varying sizes that are more fitting with the scale of everything else in Factorio

I found this design (By searching) that caught my sight at once! I guess this one fits really well to the game design as well.

It is unclean in the look. Mechanical at some degree. Not a sleek fancy design. Looks like it could come from the game itself!

Making a poll and influencing the voters at the same time. You should be a politician.
And btw. that "boring concrete design" is my favourite.

B5 perfectly matches all the cooling towers I ever see in use; it's the first thing that comes to mind for 'cooling tower'. Sorry if you don't like it, but it's what the iconic cooling tower is, for me.

Can we have the poll numbers next to every picture please?

I like both of these designs.
The design Zefnoly found is perfect for 2x2 scale cooling towers. Those capture the industrial look of factorio really well and seem to be stacked next to another even in reality.
The huge towers on the other hand are iconic for a nuclear plants. They could be used as higher tier 3x3 or 4x4 cooling towers replacing several of the smaller ones.

Yeah, that design (that you posted, silk) really is an iconic nuclear tower design. Just about every video game ever uses it, making for instant recognizability, which is important.

The other design that I see a lot of around where I work - maybe it's a regional thing - is the open side/crossflow type. Big obvious pipes, the option for visible falling water on the sides... very factorio-ish.
