[0.17.43] Laptop freeze opening graphics options screen
[0.17.43] Laptop freeze opening graphics options screen
1. What did I do
I noticed that my mouse (Logitech track ball) got progressively slower and jerkier as I played. As soon as I exited Factorio, mouse movement and response was smooth and fast. I checked the forums, checked game properties, went back into the game to check all my settings. I hit Escape to bring up the game menu, clicked on Settings and then Graphics.
The only other open program was my Firefox browser with two tabs open - Facebook and the forums.
2. What happened
The graphics options screen opened. My mouse cursor disappeared. My system froze, unable to click on anything, unable to change to another window, unable to start any other programs. Hard reboot.
3. What did I expect
I expected fast smooth normal mouse movement and game operation.
Log file:
My current log file shows size 0 bytes; unable to attach with message 'file too large' No mods.
Latest save file is 27MB, but I never even loaded it when the freeze happened. I rebooted my system this morning to install the latest patches. I am not aware of any other system issues. I had played 3 or 4 hours of Factorio today before this happened.
The crash left my config file in an invalid state. Reset to default.
Changes to default are windowed mode rather than full screen, and enabling experimental updates, alt-mode options etc. The crash did not repeat as soon as I re-opened the game. I will continue to play and report if/when I can make it repeat.

Re: [0.17.43] Laptop freeze opening graphics options screen
After playing for 5 to 10 minutes, suddenly my mouse again became very slow and jerky.
Save and exit to see if that helps.

Restart Factorio and load the game; mouse is so slow it is essentially impossible to play.

Here is a small save file from another game, showing the same slow jerky mouse effects.

I also tried from Steam, and played for almost 5 minutes before it again started showing the slow jerky mouse behaviour.

Re: [0.17.43] Laptop freeze opening graphics options screen
I did not look to see which packages were updated at the time; tried looking in a few places but as a linux noob (haven't used it for over 20 years now) I am not able to effectively search to find the answer.
I would be happy to try, again have not yet figured out how to do this. I will keep looking...
I did try my save game on Steam over on the old Windows laptop, using the same trackball, with no issues.

Found it! Restarted Gnome with X instead of Wayland, testing my save game now...

Re: [0.17.43] Laptop freeze opening graphics options screen
Played for half an hour, one or two momentary delays, otherwise back to normal.
Thank you!

After another couple of hours of play, problem is back - mouse is slow, jerky.

Re: [0.17.43] Laptop freeze opening graphics options screen
So I get about half an hour of play if I reboot using Wayland, and a couple of hours just with X... doing lots of reboots

Re: [0.17.43] Laptop freeze opening graphics options screen
The mouse issues kept getting worse and worse, affecting other applications... finally figured it out this morning, the USB receiver was plugged into the wrong port, not sure how it worked at all! Anyway, all fixed now.
