[0.16.9] Background Image not found & Slow load times

[0.16.9] Background Image not found & Slow load times

So recently I started using my desktop PC to play Factorio, and to say the lease it has been excruciating. THe basis of whats happening is the game will acheive a load time of near 20-30 mins to then finally announce that it is not able to find the background image file for the game. There has been times where the game has finally loaded after some of the troubleshooting mentioned below, but these are still followed by extensive load times.


Spec:
AMD FX 4300 quad core
Nvidia GTX 960
Mechanical hard drive (No issues in read or write times)

The things I've tried:
Reinstallation (More than once)
Verify game files (More than once)
Deletion of the sprite cache (More than once, Worked in conjunction with -force--opengl)
Use of --force-opengl (which did occur in factorio loading completely, but it still took a 40 minute load time)
Updated all graphics drivers (no Change)
Shut down antivirus as suggested in another post
restarted pc etc

I have no current mods installed.

Try turning your sprite resolution down to normal, and perhaps experiment with lowering other graphics options. I think your graphics card is running out of ram, and trying to use system memory, which is also fairly limited. I think you now need more than 2GB of dedicated Vram to run hi-res sprites with good performance in 0.16. Factorio loads in less than 30 seconds here, on my 7 year old system, but I use normal sprite resolution.

Yes, there was a dramatic increase in load times from the deletion of the Factorio config file which in turn must've reset the graphics setting back to their normal state. Sadly I'm not aware of what option I used to trigger such extreme load times but I'm simply not going to push my luck and leave them untouched now.
