How to play stable and experimental without issues?

Hiya!

So I was wondering about this. I am still playing the 0.15 stable branch on Steam, but I also want to try the experimental release.
How can I do this on Windows 7 without mixing save games, AND also having the auto-update function for the experimental release?
I don't mind installing/extracting the zip for the Exp. release to a different folder, I just want to make sure nothing gets corrupted or overwritten when I attempt this.
