serious FPS problem when steam is on the screen

just to make it absolute clear the UPS are totally fine and 60 or very close to it.

system specs:
i7 3770k
24 GB 1600 mhz ddr3 RAM
GTX 960
windows 10 14393.1066
geforce 381.89

the GPU is at 100 %

most likely unrelated infos:
main screen is a 144 Hz screen. running at 120 Hz factorio at 144 hz is a huge pain...
i play in window mode
game DVR is disabled completely

Steam/smoke is one of the worst FPS elements in Factorio. There is an option under the graphics menu to turn it off.

I don't know, as I don't know anyone with a 960, but for all the cards that I have seen, it's a Yes!
It may also not have anything to do with the power of the video card, but may have to do with the way the draws are/aren't being batched in the renderer.

fixed with nvidia 382.05.

i tested both factorio 0.15.6 and 0.15.7.
i bring this up again if this happens again. factorio is not a no name indie game nvidia can ignore.

it was most likely a bug in the nvidia driver. but please don't give other people the idea that a 960 can't handle smoke in factorio.

I wasn't out to tell you your card can't handle it, I was only giving your my experience, and in my experiences the smoke is the most graphics intensive part of the game. So much so that a 560 can run at 60/60 with high-def textures without smoke while a 780 get a FPS drop with smoke.

you may check out the GPU driver and try it again.

it is now trivial for my 960 to render factorio with smoke the GPU load is so low it doesn't matter at all.
a 780 should have any trouble with smoke too.
i wouldn't be shocked if a modern iGPU can easily render the smoke.
