Steam - nothing happens

Post by rainsbury »

Hi I have checked and cant find a similar post, but I have just bought the game through steam, clicked on the desktop icon, get a grey box saying "preparing launch Factorio" and then nothing!

I have checked the conflicting programmes and the only one present was AVG but I disabled that and it still doesn't work.

This one :).
Can you attach it all ? or is it complete ?

First thing I can see is :

Code: Select all

0.036 [0]: \\.\DISPLAY1 - NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT {0x05, [0,0], 1680x1050, 32bit, 60Hz}
If you have a standard one, it has 256 MB VRAM, which is far below the minimal system requirements (that are 512 MB).

Hi,
is this requirement new?
If you have a standard one, it has 256 MB VRAM, which is far below the minimal system requirements (that are 512 MB).
I bought the game 2 years ago and i was able to play on a 9 year old system: Win 8.1/10, c2d e6420, 4GByte Ram, geforce 7600 gt with 256 MB and with config.ini settings: graphics-quality=normal, video-memory-usage=low.

But since two weeks i have a problem with launching factorio.
I don't know if my problem is the same as this one mentioned here or that one viewtopic.php?f=7&t=30824&sid=72859df5b ... 929bb2d871. So sorry if not, i will move it to a new topic.

Untill July 2016 everything was ok. In August i did the win 10 upgrade, replaced my cpu c2d e6420 -> e8500 and updated factorio from 0.13.16 to 0.13.17.
After this update everything was ok, i could play my save game. But two days later factory didn't launch, it stopped at loading sprites ... 89%. So i tried again, deleted factorio, installed it and figured out, if i delete the file crop-cache.dat in the \AppData\Roaming\Factorio folder it will launch correctly otherwise not. Today this doesn't even work, factorio does not initialise. So i uninstalled it again and did this:

I used the installer (.exe 64 bit version 0.13.17) from your website.

1. Attempt: Installation .. starting factorio
cropping bitmaps -> loading bar is changing color from yellow to purple
loading sprites -> Error: Sprite "__base__/graphics/entity/worm/worm-attack-02.png" couldn't be loaded
factorio-current.log
2. Attempt: restart
cropping bitmaps -> error -> black window
factorio-current.log
3. Attempt: restart
cropping bitmaps at 44% -> Error: Sprite "__base__/graphics/achievement/automated-cleanup.png" couldn't be loaded
factorio-current.log
4. Attempt
same as 3

5. Attempt
loading sprites at 85% -> Error: Sprite " __base__/graphics/entity/worm/worm-attack-02.png" couldn't be loaded
factorio-current.log
6. Attempt
loading sprites at 89% -> Error: logfile
factorio-current.log
7. Attempt: Edit config.init: video-memory-usage=low
game started
factorio-current.log
8. Attempt
game started
factorio-current.log
9. Attempt
Error -> logfile
factorio-current.log
10. Edit config.init: skip-vram-detection=true
Game started, but with some graphic issues: main menu without the grey background box and buttons. Could start a game
factorio-current.log
11. Attempt
Restart without any problems
factorio-current.log
Do you have any ideas, why this happens? Is it my graphic card (requirements) or is it broken ( games like civ5, prison architect, tropic4 are running) or something else?

EDIT: ok, i think, i found the solution to my problem. What is the option "enable tree sprite mipmaps(needs restart)" in graphics settings for? It is set true at default.
This morning i did the steam installation. Did have the same problems as mentioned above. But once it started i disabled this option, and now each launch of factorio is successfull.
So i downloaded the zip version and tried tu run it. Same problems and no config folder with config.ini was created. I copy/paste it from \AppData\Roaming\Factorio (steam created this) to the unzipped folder and ... yeah .. 10/10 launch succesfull without any errors.

Does this option use lots of vram, so computers with old graphic cards can't handle it?
