Had the same Problem like the OP after deleting "crop-cache.dat" it loads till 46% then crashes.
"Error Message: Sprite cropping failed. Captured bitmap data for sprite "__base__/graphics/entity/artillery-wagon/hr-artillery-wagon-base-shadow-9.png" was null."
