+1. Here's a comparison of different gaps relative to the typical main bus design:

Image

5-8-11 allows to cleanly upgrade from yellow to blue ug belt:
4 x yellow pair = 2 x blue pair
3 x yellow pair = 2 x red pair

5-7-11 is even better, all numbers have the same parity and they group cleanly. Although increments are not equal.
4 x yellow pair = 3 x red pair = 2 x blue pair

You know that the bugs forum exists right?
But I don't know, what I exactly did. What should I write in bug-report?
If it isn't a duplicate, then make a new post with a log, what you were doing (steps for reproduction) and what went wrong.

What does it mean by "train penalty"? Is it a penalty to braking distance when driving the vehicle?

No, just a value that gets added to the distance when calculating routes.

Why calculate distances if you control manually? Isn't it the speed penalty when driving manually.

I think that part of the balancing is that your are not intended to upgrade in place.

Using yellow belts you run them 4 wide.

Using red belts you run them 6 wide.

Using blue belts you run them 8 wide.

Time to brush up on 6-6 and 8-8 balancer designs. :D

Not for the train in manual mode, but for other trains that are in their automatic mode.

mophydeen, Tubig:
I've updated that post, 5-7-11 seems to be even better: 4 x yellow pair = 3 x red pair = 2 x blue pair

Nice catch, 'though I still prefer 5-8-11... =]
Both setups would be good enough to me.

ok, I dont care about the red, I go from yellow to blue with my upgrade planner.
all my blueprints are yellow or blue.

This is only "better" in that you are comparing it to bus designs built around the old 5-5-5 limitation. Don't adapt the new underground belt mechanics to old bus designs. Design new buses!

Who experiences crashes - just don't hover your mouse over vehicle when you are inside.

Maybe that is just a typical main bus design because underground belts could always bridge 4 belts?

The UG yellow belt still has 4 tiles between ends. Usually the main bus is planned early in the game, and it's a lot of hassle to switch it to wider groups of belts.

And groups of belts that are powers of two feel more "natural" to the game: a connection of two pairs of UG belts is two tiles, splitters are two tiles, balancers look nicer for 4/8/16 belts.

Klonan, I hereby dub you Sir Obvious, rise sir knight. May you continue to heroically conquer forum idiocy forever.

:)

Time for a new bus design I think...
