[Pending] Unable to use "New game creator"

Hello,I love Factorio, but I am having a couple of problems. I have not been able to play the game by using the new game creator. When I get to the map generator page, whether I go straight to the generate map button, or try to change anything, the game breaks, and I have to use Ctrl+Alt+Del and bring up the task manager to forcefully close the game. The only way I have been able to play the game is to go into map editor and generate a new map. From there, I can play the new map as a regular game. I am currently on ver 13.14., but this problem has been the case since I first bought the game,(ver 12.10)

The second problem is the automatic updater is causing the same problem. It's starts loading the update and freezes about half way through it causing the game to lock up and once again requiring a force close using the task manager.

I am using the 64 bit Windows 8.1 operating system (I tried Windows 10 and it crashed my laptop. ) I have a HP Pavillion model 17Z-E100 laptop with an AMD A4-5000 1.5 GHZ APU with a Radeon HD Graphics card, and 4.00GB RAM.

Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

P.S.: I am going to upgrade to ver. 13.17 which I just noticed on the forum
