The treadmill prototype I found most interesting. It was going at speed, the wheels turn the propeller, which propels it along and despite the mechical losses it accelerates, going faster than the treadmill.
I never quite understoof how a yacht can tack into the wind and go faster than what the wind blows, yet it does, I'm thinking of water circling a drain, picking up speed as it goes along. Maybe this concentrates the speed?
It goes against my intuition and understanding. I can see it for myself and all I can practically think is "Why that design? That's top heavy and unstable."
A wind powered vehicle that goes faster than the wind

Seen the sequel yet? it is explained in a better way there:

I did yeah, and I was interested in the push you, pull me boat. This is an area of physics that doesn't make sense to me.
Re: A wind powered vehicle that goes faster than the wind
They say in the video it's because of the curve in the sail, it creates difference in air speed between the 2 sides of the sail which generates thrust where in plane-wing it generates lift, thus sailboat can go faster than the wind if they zigzag.
The particular case of this vehicule is that it can go faster than the wind IN the same direction than the wind.
It does so by pushing the wind back with a big fan, for every bit faster this vehicule goes, the wind goes slower behind him.
The way you zigzag with sailboat is to always keep the sail in the correct position relative to the wind, while maintaining the ship toward the same general direction.
With the weird vehicule, you don't need to adjust something's position relative to the wind by moving the whole vehicule since the sail is replaced by the big fan, its rotating motion ensures theres is always a part of it that acts to generate thrust.
at least that's how it got in my head but i wouldn't bet money on it
It made me think to : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotor_ship quite baffling too ! this one is more common : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_sailing , you can find plenty of videos that demonstrate how fast those goes , definitly faster than the wind !
Why don't we use that for space-ship already ? there would be real ships, sailing on stellar wind but faster !

I think that in order to understand the principle of movement of ships and planes, it is necessary to delve into the laws of physics in more detail, study the force of resistance, etc.
