How to remove members from UnitGroup?

How does one safely remove members from a UnitGroup? Is it as simple as removing them from the members field table, and setting their command to some default, or will this lead to some odd behaviors? Clear info and examples of the subject have been hard to come by for me. Also, what happens when a UnitGroup loses all its members- is the group destroyed, or does it stay around (one that is created artificially, that is)?
