Sorry, apparently 120+ hours into the game I still don't know how mining drills are supposed to work. I've looked back at older footage from the game and this seems to be how they work, but it doesn't make sense to me. I thought (and it also makes somewhat more sense, personally) that mining drills only output when the moving part (the "drill", I suppose) reached the front of the entity - like it's mining and then deposits the ore it had collected when it reaches the output.
What I found happened, which was completely unexpected was that the mining drill output ore about twice for each time the dill moved forward and backward. This wasn't at the front and back either. Instead, it was at two points which changed about 5% of the length of the mining drill each time a piece of ore was output.
If this is intended behavior, I'm fine with that (though I'll always notice it now...), but I just thought I'd let you know.
