[0.17.69] Crash while the character was simply running (autosave crash?)

I had been playing the game for a lot of hours already. The computer did its usual hardware-based crashes* every now and then when I forgot to change the coolant water, forcing me to boot the computer and have a short break. No biggie there. But then: My character in Factorio is simply... running. And then BOOM! There's a surprisingly friendly looking error message drawn with the OS's own toolkit, asking me to file a bug report (which is damn lot more cumbersome than it should be! I'm not really interested in this forum. I just want to build my knowingly untidy factory! :) )
I didn't notice any autosave happening, but there seems to be a "_autosave.tmp.zip" created at the same moment as the factorio-current.log, which suggests that those things might be somehow connected.
Everything required should be in the attached zip. I think. Happy to give any further help if needed. Now a friend is calling and telling me to do something that I've promised to do, so there's a good chance I won't be launching the game again for over a week now. Which might be a good thing for slaughtering this bite^H^H^H^Hbug, possiblymaybe?


(About the hardware crashes that have been happening for a few years now on this 9-year-old computer: The computer fully stops responding until I pull the cord, leaving funny coloured horizontal stripes and sometimes just colourful noise on the screen. I think it's the video card overheating. Keeping a pot 1/4 full with tap-cold water atop my Mac Mini alleviates that problem, as does zooming quite close to the character while playing Factorio. And it crashes when doing anything that is processor-heavy and visual at the same time. The crash I am now reporting was clearly very different from the hardware crashes, as only the game crashed and not everything went big para-boom. This information of my computer suffering chronic hardware-based crashing is here only in order to mention even those things I find extremely unlikely to have affected the crash.)

PS. Thanks for the update making the game playable on this ooold home computer of mine! Earlier I had to go to the public library to play with their gaming computers, but now my home computer can do the trick too. Youse are awesome!

Now, with more time in my hands, it seems that the crash was caused by a fish in a lake?(!!) I had quite recently used the land filling tool for one or two squares in a lake. Could that have something to do with it somehow? I can't remember causing a fish to suffocate within a pile of dry land, but maybe it somehow did, anyway?

Another crash while autosaving. This time I noticed the autosave happen just before/during the crash.
I was running with a single locomotive on manual controls, to stop some biters from destroying my east-southeastern mining facility, when the game went kaboom and asked me to file this report.

Thanks for the report. The crashes are in places where it should never be possible to crash and unfortunately I have no idea how it might have crashed there outside of memory corruption.

Do you have any way to reproduce the crash(es)? Also, could you try running something like metest86+?

I don't think there's a way to reproduce the crashes, because at the point of them happening, I will have played 5 minutes without saving, and I would need to do the precise same key presses (and mouse movements!) for five minutes.
But, I did run memtest86, and it did find a pile of errors in some of the tests.
Test -- Errors

After finishing, it seemed to start a second run. I let it run until somewhere around the 5th test, and the result panel on the right changed this way:

5 -- 10

...and during the second run the water in the pot atop my computer was very warm to the hand again, so that I had to change it twice during the memtest86.
Seems that the memory works the worse the hotter the computer gets. And indeed, the crashes tend to happen after several hours of playing.
So, in the end, probably nothing to worry about, if I guess correctly? I mean, my computer can go up in flames, it's old enough for that. I just want the good game to run fine, and apparently it does just that and the computer it runs on is getting a bit grumpy as it gains age? :)

This essentially means your RAM is not working correctly. When you write specific data into it, you don't always get the same data out of it. This will cause all kinds of unreproducible errors in all processes running on your computer. Random crashes of the operating system included.

Maybe it is time to get a new computer, if it is really old. Or at least some replacement for the erroneous RAM modules.
