When in alt mode, the furnace has in the past shown an icon to display what is currently being smelted, or what is currently in the output slot even if there's no smelting in process.
I have failed to get the second part to happen at all. Playing normal settings (not campaign) and none of the furnaces have shown an icon when filled with items of some type but not smelting. I have failed to create a case where this does not happen.
I guess this could be considered a feature, but in that case this thread can be moved to suggestions.
