At least for petroleum, as the barreling recipe executes, it incrementally fills up the fluid box from 0..50. Meanwhile, every five fluid units along the way, a barrel is output from the assembler.
Meanwhile, the recipe says it's for one barrel, 0.2 seconds, costing 50 fluid units (in my head they are "gulps" ). So the recipe disagrees with virtual reality by a factor of ten AFAICT. Feel like I'm missing something obvious...?

An isolated setup like doesn't show this behaviour - it clearly operates on 50 units. Have you tried lowering the game speed down, so you can see frame-by-frame? When the barreling recipe starts, it instantly pulls 50 from the fluid box, allowing fluid to flow in again - it might go from 50 fluid back to 100 in only one frame if the input pipes are full. Or, if they are mostly full, they may jump up to around 95.

Thanks for the report but I have no idea what you're talking about
Nothing changed in the barreling mechanics - that logic has been the same for the entirety of 0.13, 0.14, 0.15, and now 0.16.

OK, well, as I hinted in my report, I'm definitely open to the possibility of pebkac w/ this one... I'll have to look again and see if I can't put my finger on exactly what is wrong with me and/or factorio If I come up with some clarity regarding either source of error I'll update this thread.
