[0.18.4] inserters wont load train

Whats happening:
Train pulls into station and stops. Inserters are supposed to load contents from chests into wagons.
Often Inserters appear to fail to recognize goods in the chest and fail to load same.
Train wagons are set so slots are designated for a particular type of good.
Inserter seems to be 'stuck' holding a good that is not required for the load, while goods that are needed, remain sitting in the chest. The designated slots in the wagon stay empty.

Whats expected: Inserter selects goods from the chest and fills designated slots in the train wagon with the required good. Inserter loads all required goods (assuming goods are available in the chest) until wagon is full.

Sounds like "not a bug", as inserters can certainly stall if they have something in their hand that they can't release.

If you're using inserters to pick up varied materials to put into a filtered source, then you probably need to use filter inserters so they only pick up the right materials.

In certain scenarios, limiting the stack size to 1 can also help with this, as the inserter won't pick up more than it's able to drop off. Avoids the inserter being left holding material that won't fit into the wagon. Albeit, it is a trade off for slower loading.

I limited the stack size to 1 and it did as you suggested. It stops the inserter being left holding material that wont fit in the wagon.
With that change the inserters load just fine.

Glad to hear that it helped!

Another alternative that I have yet to try personally, is a mod by the name of Picklocks Inserter. By the sounds of it, it tries to make the inserters return items that it's unable to drop, provides a "cleaner" to manually clean items from intserters hands, etc.

If you're not adverse to mods, this might be one route to go and would hopefully not require you to limit the stack size.
