Need help with Factorio math and modules

Post by KAA »

Hi Guys!
I need your help with such an exciting thing as "Factorio math".

I'm not an expert but I like this thing very much,
when you make calculation on the paper and in Factorio calc,
Count number of factories, belt, stuff. Then you design it trying not to allow bottlenecks.
Then test it and oh god, you large factory works as expected!
I could watch this for hours probably!
Or it doesn't work, and you trying to figure out what's wrong. Which is also great.

But space production includes modules (without them it's too large for me to manage in game)
So I try to optimize my factories so that they can work with some at least approximately valid ratios, and I failed. mostly because of modules.

For example, let's decompose Rocket Conrol Units production.

It needs Processors and Speed Module 1 (SM).
Given we have enough Proccessors, let's focus on SM.

For example, I have 8 Speed Module 1 factories x4 Speed Module 3 each, for saving space.
It will be like
1 SM in 15 Sec +200% of Speed = 3 SM in 15 sec = 1 SM in 5 sec.
So for 8 factories it will be like
8 SM in 5 sec.
And
48 SM in 30 sec needed for Rocket Control Unit factory

So, I can feed with my SM factories exactly 48 Rocket Control Unit Factories.

Question 1: Why in reality, if I build this setup and SM production goes as expected,
I have not enough SM for 48 factories and I can see some of them starving?
Is it because of belts lenght? something else? How do I solve this?

Question 2: Let's say I want to save space and resourses and Build a line of Rocket Control Unit factories each by x4 Prod Module surrounded by Beacons x2 Speed Module 3 each.
I'm getting a line of Rocket Control Unit factories +40 Productivity +90% Speed Each.

How much of these factories do I need to consume my 1 SM in 5 sec * 8 SM Factories?
How do I calculate this?
My theoretical answers lead to me seeing them starving again.

I know there are people who are very good at such "Factorio math", so hope for some answers.

Thank you in advence!

The general formula is about two thirds down under "Modules and Beacons":

There is also this:

8 to 48 works in theory

Beaconed and moduled you need a lot less:

Instead of using SM3 in the SM1 assemblers you can also do 8 SM3 in beacons (one half of the RCU beacons):

Thanks! I was not aware of the first link.
It's extremely helpful and I'm glad you showed it to me.
Great to have all this info in one place.
Also blueprints with belt balancing are extremely valuable I think.

As for the calculations - yeah, your links confirmed my calculations.
First, thing is that it seems I did not use modules and beacons section of the calculator in the right way - now I see your examples and understand how to use it.
But calculations on paper were right.

Second, is that looks like because of long production time, rocket parts factory sections can work without starving even if supply belt is not filled with items and they are quite rear on the belt. So I need to look closely and I hope that theory will be put in life and will work as expected.

Thank you very much.
