What is the penalty for death?

Having not died yet, it makes me a little worried to run out and try to take down some of the biter nests. Is death permanent? Am I justified in my paranoia? Or should I start taking a few more risks?

Death is permanent. You have to load a saved game if you want to continue playing.

At least the save isn't deleted, I'll just have to remember to save before going out to fight.

There's an autosave every 2 minutes unless you change it, so it's not too much of a worry. At one point I kept getting run over by my own trains running through my base, and I would just load whatever autosave was most recent.
