Research for Technologies takes forever?

I've been trying to research "Optics" for the last 20 minutes and the squares in the upper right hand corner of the screen stay blank. What do I do to get the process started?

Did you put science packs in the lab? You need to provide labs with power and science packs of the appropriate color(s) of them to work.

Appropriate science packs and electricity in at lest one laboratory?

You need to build a lab (craft one in the crafting menu and place it), supply it with electricity and feed it with science packs.

The early research items require science pack 1 (the red ones), later technology requires more advanced science packs. You should really automate production of them all, because otherwise your research will take forever. Oh, and you can build multiple labs for faster research
