Destroying an item

Is there anyway to destroy or recycle an item or a bunch of items? (Just started the game)
Made a bunch of stuff I don't need and its taking up inventory space

Pressing "C" while your cursor is over a wooden chest removes the contents (and the chest) quite quickly, especially if you have the flamethrower equiped.
Other options include driving over the chest with a tank (personal favourite) or throwing a grenade at it.

Didn't seem to work (the "C") although the chest was a iron chest, it only works with a wooden?

"c" is force-fire. You'll fire whatever weapon is equipped at the cursor target, even if it's friendly. If it isn't working, you may not have a weapon (with ammo) equipped. Usually people throw the stuff to be destroyed in wooden chests, simply because it's the cheapest container. But if you're feeling the kind of person who rolls their cigars with $100 bills, feel free to use more expensive containers.
