Depleted Iron Ore in New Hope 2

Hello, I've been playing this game for a few days now and I'm really enjoying it. However, I've come across a problem.

I've depleted all iron ore near the spawn location and I don't have enough iron to finish the mission.
How can I get more iron ore? Do I have to get in the car and follow the rail in hope, I'll find some? There doesn't seem to be any nearby.

Why do you think so and haven't tried it?

Yes, obviously the people that built that base built rails going somewhere for some reason. Follow them and see what the reason is.

I've gone some distance, but I just ran into a forest on the west and the rail just ends on the east. Also I was scared of enemies I could see on the horizon. I guess I'm gonna try to go further now.

Now I've gone a bit further and found a ton of iron ore.

I didn't go along the rail before, because I thought that was going to be the next mission, fill up your car with resources and follow the rail. I guess I should have followed it a little longer before.
