why is this train setup not working?

Don't know how to use a machine? Looking for efficient setups? Stuck in a mission?

why is this train setup not working?

so I was setting up a train station for Iron ore and I need to get more then one iron train on the tracks but when I try to set up holding area for the other iron train to wait in the rail chain signal will always turn red no matter where i put the other rail signal. why is this?

1. You need to put a rail signal between the station and the merge.
2. Holding areas need rail signals, not chain signals.

It's not guaranteed for every situation but, at least when your train network is fairly small, the easiest way I have found to deal with signals is to drop a chain signal on every track going INTO a split/merge and a rail signal on every rack going OUT of a split or merge. You also need to ensure that there is at least enough track AFTER the rail signals to hold your longest train, otherwise you will need another chain signal instead.
