Inserters picking up wrong resource for furnaces?

Post by Morlow »

Hey all, I have a newbie question. I have a line of furnaces that I want to use to smelt multiple ores, however the inserters keep putting 1 stone in the furnace and then picking up an iron or copper next, so all the furnaces are blocked. Is there any way to prevent this before I get smart inserters?

Without smart Inserters I don't think it can really be done if you have multiple resources on one belt. Obviously Coal and whatever resource you want to smelt can share a belt without a problem, but other can't without clogging it up unless you use Smart Inserters.

I make a little example for you.
Its smelt all what came without beeing blocked.
Smart Filter make it possible.

We had all that discussion already, but again: What is, when in the chest are 3 stone and your inserter-stacksize-bonus is 3?
What is, if your factory has for a moment no energy (so long, that your filters don't work)?

From Belt to chest its only possible to take 1 pieces at onces ... so that is no problem ... i have tested it and it work perfect.
Maybe its possible to make it easier but that setup work!
The furnace get only 2 or 4 stone so there is no blocking possible.
Try it and show me a scenario where its not working.
With less power its work too.

EDIT:
My inserter stack bonus is 2 (3 pieces at once from chest to chest/machine) ... so when you dont have a bonus than it doesnt work. But with Bonus 1 or more its working.
When you will make steel on the same way THEN you have the problem but 5 piecses at once you need inserter stack bonus 4 ... for steel you right!
That will need a another solution when you only want use stack bonus 2 ... but its still possible.

Short answer (cause I don't want to repeat everything): It is not so easy to have a reliable multi-ore smelting. For example: Your setup will break, if your output inserters cannot place the items on the belts, because they are filled.

Please read the above mentioned threads. :)

No it works ...
Look i have make a savegame for you where you can test it.
You only need to set the missing Belt and look how the smelter start again an no stuck or else.

Dont need any mods ... have one but its not changing anything that would brake this.

When you dont can it make, dont say its impossible.

O.K. I looked at it and it works, cause a) you are using electric furnaces, b) you are just smelting everything.
The subject I have been pointing to where multi-smelting on demand plus also furnacing of steel.

In general this means: You need to sort the items FIRST, then you can release some items for smelting, if you need them (cause otherwise you are really fast overproducing plates).

So much negative said, I think the positive side of this idea - to use two inserters to fill the furnaces - is quite useful for a setup, where you are overproducing some type of ore. I mean this: Instead of storing the ores, it is much more efficient to put the overproduction in this type of furnace-factory, cause you can store the plates much more efficient.

I will try that with my next game.
