Playing on 2 computers

Post by Mark100 »

Hi there,

i'm very new, actually downloaded the demo and built my mining drill ! So far i'm quite happy becasue what i had to do in other games the whole game, has now ended(pickaxe using).
But i have 2 computers, one at home and the other at work, i do nightshifts.
So..is there a easy and quick way, to take the savegame from home to work ? Can i simply drop a file into my cloud account ?

Hi,

Go into your factorio folder. There should be a link to a folder named "saves". What you're looking for is there, it's a simple zip file, so it's easy to keep it synchronized between your home and work PC via the cloud (or an USB stick).

You could save directly to the cloud using symbolic links.

Download the portable(zip) version, and put it on a memory stick.

Because that is a very good way to completely trash your usb-stick since flash memory degrades with each read-write cycle, and autosaves happen every 2 minutes.

Totally : your USB stick would probably die after 20 years of 24/7 Factorio gameplay, phear :)

More like half a year, if looking at it realistically.

I don't know the true numbers, but Flash drives aka thumb drives tend to be not very reliable, so it may be a bad idea. This is in contrast to SSD drives, which are made to be much more durable, and at this point are probably more reliable than HDDs.

Edit: Googling a bit I found this - http://cfgearblog.blogspot.com/2011/03/ ... st_22.html so - unless it's an old or cheap thumb drive, you are probably on the clear :)
Still, it is always wise to have backups of any important data!

I've been doing it for nearly 2 years and not had any issues yet.

On any SSD, you can write several thousand times its total capacity before it really start to wear out. Even if an USB flash disk is even lower grade, I'm pretty sure you can write at least a few thousand. That's maybe 100 TB on a 32 GB USB Stick ... it's a LOT of autosaves :).

Not completely on topic, but techreport has an amazing SSD endurance test writeup http://techreport.com/review/27909/the- ... e-all-dead

Well, I do it the oldschool way. I start my factorio via batch file with an integrated batchmenu, one option is: Start, the other option: Download and Start.

Start does start factorio, Download and Start connects to my FTP and puts the files into the save-directory. At the end, when I close Factorio the batch file is continued and uploads the save files onto my FTP server from where they may be downloaded again when I switch the PC (also between home and work mostly during weekend- or nightshifts).

Pretty much old tech, but well, I grew up with that stuff in the 90's. :)
