Wood spawn question

Hello,
I just returned to Factorio after a long pause and noticed that when I start a new game I have one wood in the inventory which I don't remember being there on start when I last played. I found out this has been added in 0.17 but can't find any info. Is it connected to the then introduced new map generation system to guarantee a beatable game even without trees on the map (sort of a challenge) or maybe I am missing something?

Exactly. If you start a game with zero trees, you would be locked out of any progress without that wood. You need it to move electricity from the steam engine to the lab before you research medium/large power poles, and later substations.
