In the MP game mode, death works differently, in that instead of the game ending, you're reincarnated at the spawn point (coordinates 0,0) but all the gear you carried is gone forever.
That's a somewhat attractive way to play, and it should be possible to achieve that by starting a MP game, and with latency set very low (33ms, or maybe 25 or 20 or even 15), but then simply not inviting any of one's friends to join. Are there any drawbacks of solo MP gaming, though?
Any issues with playing MP alone?

Nope, since you wont be playing with anyone you set latency as low as it can go. If you're gonna be using console commands be sure to check that box before you load your map

Problem number one about playing multiplayer alone, you're playing Multiplayer alone :p

Another minor thing to consider is that the game will not auto-pause when you open a menu. However, you can pause anytime by pressing "pause game".
