Tutorials by Cathril

Post by cathril »

Hey everyone,

Some of you might know me already and are watching my Let's play series. But i decided to create some tutorials for this wonderful game.
In my tutorials video's i will try to explain the most important things of the game but i also want to have the video's be really short. This way you can cover certain problems and topics pretty well and maximize your own gameplay as much as possible. In the video's there will be also tips and tricks to do certain things. If you know more tips or Tricks, feel free to leave them behind, since i'm still learning this game aswell!

If there are certain topics that you want to see, or are not covered yet please feel free to leave a comment aswell. I know the game is still in Alpha version, and what i tell now can be older in the upcoming patches, but i will try to keep them up to date. If you feel i am telling the wrong information and again feel free to leave a comment below.

Also in this first post i will list all the tutorials that i make, but i will post every video individually.

#01 Basic Setup http://youtu.be/KplxApoGfHE
#02 Basic Power http://youtu.be/hLgBqaKmkG0
#03 Electric Mining http://youtu.be/MPrgEJLnDbY
#04 Basic Smelting http://youtu.be/T51PwnYGnjY

Well, I find the whole oil/chemistry thing slightly overwhelming. The early and mid game is easy enough, you to Iron and Copper, then Steel and Brick, and components.

But ahead of me looms this slightly intimidating complexity of having to deal with oils and chemicals of many, many kinds, storing them in tanks and so forth. So far I have yet to dive into it. Every time I've progressed that far in the game, I've started over, in part because I wanted to make a better factory, but also in part because the drastic complexity increase intimidated me.

At least in normal (not Campaign) game mode, it all arrives at once, having to deal with this new basic mat and its many derivatives, and using Pipes instead of Belts. All at once. So a tutorial on that, explaining the basic principles and demonstrating a fairly good (not necessarily) perfect setup would be very welcome.

Heey man, thank you for your reaction. I will make it as soon as possible. Not sure if oil tutorioals can be fit into in one video, but i will make them as short as possible :)

@Cathril: good on you for doing some tutorials. Explain the concepts in your own words and bring something new to the table. Not everyone learns the same way, so the more people we have explaining things, the more likely someone will get the point eventually if they watch enough .

Given a bit of searching, you can find a couple of good tutorials on Oil. However it does take practice. Once you've done it half a dozen times, its not so daunting :D

Thanks for the kind words -Root, i was already in doubt if i should start doing a tutorials series, since there are already a bunch out there already. But i decided to do it anyways because the are a loot of new players comming to the game now that a bunch of bigger youtubers started playing the game and there large community is starting to get interested in this game. Also there are a lot of good tutorials allready online but are pretty darn long to watch and most people want just short video's where the things are explained.

Offcourse the tutorials are a way to play the game, but not always a perfect solution. But that is also the fun side of this game, if you can get it to work, in any form, its good! And you should have fun.

One thing I'm wary of is outdated tutorials. I'm used to early access alpha games changing a lot, and rapidly, and so I tend to steer away from tutorials that are more than a couple of months old, if they deal with complex aspects of the game, as opposed to teaching the basics. Or at least if I see a new tutorial and an older tutorial, on the same subject, my preference would be to watch the new one.

Thankfully the core mechanics of factorio haven't changed very much. everything has stayed pretty much stable.

Well, that's the kind of thing that isn't obvious to most people used to early access games. I think the assumption that "if age_of_tutorial > 4 months = ignore it" is pretty widespread, among fans of high-compexity early access games. And I have noticed that the game interface changes over time. A few days ago I watched part of a tutorial uploaded in December 2014, but the interface looked different from what I'm used to (not just the avatar looks, but minor aspects of the UI) so I figure it must have been recorded in October or earlier, before I started playing. And going a bit further back, many of the inventory icons start to look different, which can easily make it hard to follow such tutorials.

So, what I'm saying is that there is definitely a "market" for new tutorials, even if extremely thorough and very high-quality but slightly older tutorials already exist. And I guess I'm also saying that older tutorials could do with some kind of reverse disclaimer "even though this tutorial is kinda old, the game hasn't really changed that much, and you'll still benefit from watching my stuff".

Let me know what you think.

Have fun watching.
