What are the advantages of using the better pylons. I have NO idea.

I don't know much about pylons, but I do know we must construct additional pylons.
But uhh.. the medium ones have a bigger range, so can power more squares than the smaller ones. The large pylons have a smaller range but can be extended further, you generally want to use them to get power to a far away base.

Once you get into trains, you'll be using Medium and Large power poles/pylons a lot more. Might even use a few substations.
