Factorio crashes upon installing updates

I think I've reported this issue in the past somewhere, although I cannot find that post so I'm making a new one since the issue is still present.

After installing an update Factorio will crash and Windows displays the following message:

Factorio.exe has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

After the crash Factorio starts right up again. Normally, this isn't a big deal but I've not updated since 0.9.2. So I had to update several times before I finally reached the latest version. Just a tad annoying having to crash a few times to finish all the updates. Both of my computers experience this issue, both on Windows 8 and 8.1.

This definitely shouldn't happen.

Now a little bit tricky question: what was the last version of factorio where the crash appeared? I mean -- if you were updating from 0.9.2 to 0.9.6 and everything went smoothly, the whole update would be performed by 0.9.2. If it crashed during the update, it's possible that you restarted it and the rest of the update was done by 0.9.4 ...
I'm asking this, because we added some updater related fixes and significantly improved the update error messages in 0.9.4.

Also, did you change any files in base or core?

This crash happens with every single version I have ever used since auto-updating was put into place. Well, not sure if I started playing before or after that but every time I have updated when prompted this occurs. I've made no changes to the code at all. This happens both with the zipped and installed versions of the game.

The game never crashes during the update, it happens right at the very end when the progress bar fills up. It shows that it's updating the package 0.9.2 to 0.9.3 and then crashes... then I have to update as 0.9.3 to 0.9.4 package, and so on. I earliest I can remember this happening was around 0.6.x.

I belive I encountered something similar if not the same when updating some version in 0.8.x branch.
I never managed to recreate it but I suspect that ti might be caused by Wundows UAC (it happened soon after Windows UAC promtet me that Factorio requests elevated permision in order to restart itself).

Now that 0.10.0 has at least some logging -- once the 0.10.1 is released try updating (but make sure you are startnig at 0.10.0) again and if it crashes, upload the factorio-current.log it should have some useful info. The file is placed in the write data directory, that is next to the saves directory.

This is still happening, the update does succeed, it just does not look nice.

what does it look like to the user:
- factorio starts and prompts to install update.
- User accepts and download is done.
- Windows UAC prompts for elevated privileges ('do you want to allow factorio to make changes to your computer')
- just after that the factorio screen greys out (like a non resposive application is) and prompt is shown; 'factorio has run into a problem and needs to close'
- after close factorio restarts with the updated version.

I've seen this for all updates that could be done automatically from 0.9.8 (?, the last 0.9 version at least).
No mods are installed.

Well, this was supposed to be fixed in 0.10.9 so if the fix works, it will affact the update 0.10.9 -> 0.10.10

That looks like a graphics card crash (nvd3dumx.dll) - do you have any other computer you could test updating from 0.10.9 -> 0.10.10 on? Or, could you check if you have the latest graphics drivers for your computer?

I updated my card a few weeks ago, so the drivers were already pretty new. As it is a bit older video card (Asus Geforce GT640) I'd expect the bugs to be out of the drivers. There were indeed newer drivers available so I updated to be sure.

This is where it gets interesting. For these tests I did the following as preparation:
Uninstalled factorio via control panel.
Deleted Program files\factorio and AppData\Roaming\Factorio folders.
Install Setup_Factorio_x64_0.10.9.exe
Start factorio,
Configure experimental updates to yes, set language to english.
Close Factorio.

Test 1: Auto update on apllication start:
Start Factorio, enter account info, allow update:
module in error is factorio.exe exception: 0xc0000005 error offset: 0x0000000000595bad

Test 2: Auto update on apllication start, administrator rights
Start Factorio as administrator, enter account info, allow update:
No fault.

Test 3: Update from about screen
Start Factorio, select ask me later for update:

UAC is enabled and I did get the (expected) prompt.
But no 'application has stopped working.

I still did get an error while updating, though it is different now. I updated from 0.10.11 to 0.10.12 on Windows 8.1 64bit.

After restarting factorio.exe the updateprocess did work however.
