[0.13.8] [Pending] FPS Lag on entire computer

Post by PiggyWhiskey »

I'm losing FPS across my entire computer when Factorio has alot of trees or smoke on the screen.
It only happens on random instances of the game, and can occur on a fresh map.
It drops to about 15fps and affects my second monitor too.
It also occurs when the game is paused.
There isn't a spike in RAM/CPU usage according to Task Manager.

Restarting the entire Factorio Instance sometimes fixes it, and will fix it for the entire time it's running.

Zoom:
2.0 @ 60/60 fps/ups
1.75 @ 50/60
1.5 @ 38/60
1.25 @ 29/60
1.0 @ 19/60
0.75 @ 15/60
0.55 @ 14.5/60
0.5 @ 15/60
0.45 @ 17/60
0.4 @ 20/60
0.3 @ 32/60
0.25 @ 38/60
0.2 @ 47/60
0.1 @ 30/60

Towards 0.2/0.1 I started getting smoke being displayed, perhaps causing the dip in fps again?

  1. post the log
  2. post your system specs
  3. make screenshots with and without the issue with time_used_percent and show_fps activated in the debug menu (F4 > F5)

Those are tell-tale symptoms of a computer with a weak graphics card.

Try turning the VRAM/graphics quality down.
If you want to get ahold of me I'm almost always on Discord.

CPU: i7-3820 @ 3.6GHz
GPU: GTX 680
RAM: 32GB

After fiddling around with the Graphics Settings, it turns out it was caused by "Video Memory Usage"
"High" works perfectly fine with everything.
"All" causes the FPS issues.

The times when it stopped working must have been when I tried a fresh install.
